Parasyte The Maxim Ep.23 – “Life and Oath” (Summary)

Shinichi locates Gotou’s whereabouts where the latter is crouched down, apparently asleep. He quickly tries to cut the enemy but Gotou instantly blocks his attack. Their battle commences once again, but without Migi, Shinichi knows that he can never defeat the parasite, so he aims to at least cause some damage to its body. However, with Gotou’s speed and power, he is almost invincible, but on the last minute, Shinichi finds a rod that he uses to pierce his opponent’s body.

He successfully punctures Gotou, who in turn becomes furious for being impaled by a lone human. Just when he is about to kill the boy, his body suddenly changes and Migi manages to return to Shinichi’s right arm and dodges the attack from the enemy. The toxins from the rod that Shinichi used to pierce Gotou cause the other parasites in his body to struggle and explode upon Migi’s attack, killing the host in an instant. However, even after the blast, Gotou still tries to summon the smaller cells in his body to revive himself. Migi lets Shinichi decide whether he will totally annihilate Gotou or just let him regenerate since he doesn’t want to murder his own kind. After hesitating for a while, Shinichi finally makes up his mind and decides to kill Gotou for the sake of his family and humanity.

Parasyte The Maxim Ep.22 – “Quiescence and Awakening” (Summary)

Shinichi and Migi have finally decided to face Goto who has already started chasing them. Migi formulates a plan to leave Shinichi’s right arm so they can work separately. However, the risk is too high and Migi doesn’t have enough time to strike Goto since his consciousness starts to fade away immediately. Shinichi impales the enemy on the leg, distracting him for a moment which gives Migi the chance to behead him. Unfortunately, his cut isn’t deep enough and he immediately realizes that their plan is a failure. He instructs Shinichi to run away while he attacks Gotou and after hesitating for some time, the young man flees the scene, leaving Migi alone as he starts to fade away.

MIGI: “This is farewell, Shinichi. I’m glad I didn’t take over your brain when we first met. Thanks to that, we made many good memories as friends.” ©Madhouse

Shinichi ends up in a village where Mitsuyo lives. The old woman offers him some help after seeing his injury and right arm. He stays in her house for a few days until someone from the village frantically informs them about a monster that attacked his friend. Shinichi instantly knows that the man refers to Gotou, and he decides to confront the enemy by himself after he learns that the villagers plan to attack the parasite. Mitsuyo tries to stop him from leaving, but Shinichi doesn’t want the villagers to be killed and sacrificed while he continues to run for his life.

That night, he bids farewell to the old woman and takes a rusty cleaver as a weapon before running into the darkness, unaware of the monster that is waiting for him.

Parasyte The Maxim Ep.20 – “Crime and Punishment” (Summary)

The operation to exterminate the parasites continues as the police officers successfully identify the first target among the evacuees. Upon hearing the gunshots, Hirakawa and his aides instantly come up with a plan knowing that the squads are deployed to extinguish them. The politician and some of his subordinates inform the officers that they need to go to the second floor of the building to notify the civilians left in the area. That moment, the parasites who are already escorted outside cause a commotion that leads to the destruction of the sensing system that Yamagishi uses. Hirama persuades him to take Uragami as a substitute for the broken sensory equipment. The chaos continues inside the building as other parasites suddenly reveal themselves, leaving the officers agitated as they shoot anyone that seems suspicious regardless of their real identities.

Hirakawa and his members take that opportunity to go to the second floor. Yamagishi joins the other police officers in slaughtering the monsters while he gives them the commands. Each squad is designated to different locations as he instructs Uragami to assist the others in pointing out the parasites. During the operation, Yamagishi somehow gets a grasp on how to identify the enemies as well, and he orders his team to shoot anyone they see. The assault continues until Uragami spots Goto, and the former immediately runs away, frightened upon realizing what kind of monster he is.

Five officers follow Goto as he leads them to a room and gives them two minutes to shoot him. However, even when his whole body is covered with bullet holes, no blood oozes out and he remains upright. He then attacks the stunned officers using his “shotgun pellets” before he leaves the area.

The episode concludes when the other squads surround Hirakawa who is standing in the center of the room. As they point their guns at him, the mayor welcomes and greets them composedly.

Parasyte The Maxim Ep.19 – “In Cold Blood” (Summary)

A short background story about Uragami is shown, though there is no clear explanation as to how he attained his special ability to tell parasites apart from humans. He initially suspects Shinichi, but later on brushes his suspicions aside. Even though Hirama still surmises Shinichi, he asks him for his help, together with the serial killer, to help the police conduct an operation to exterminate the aliens. Yamagishi, the other officer in charge of the core operation to identify and eliminate the enemies, also has a sensing system that he claims to be able to recognize parasites.

“But this ability of mine something most animals have, anyway? It’s just about telling your own kind apart from others.” ©Madhouse

Takeshi Hirokawa, on the other hand, talks with Gotou about their missing members. They conclude that Kusano, Hikawa and Maesawa were killed by Tamura Reiko, who in turn, was also shot dead by the police in the park.

“They’re claiming they’re the police? My bet would be that none of them are from the police. So you’re really moving forward with this, humans?” ©Madhouse

The operation led by Yamagishi and Himara commences at the building where Hirokawa works. The police order the people in the building to evacuate the area by groups of seven, pretending that an armed suspect is concealing himself on the rooftop. As each group of people exit the building, they are being monitored and examined by the sensory device used by Yamagishi to hunt which among them are parasites. Uragami and Shinichi are also checking them on the screen, but so far, they haven’t detected anyone yet.

Just then, the sensing system spots the first parasite in the third batch of evacuee, as the investigators prepare to launch their attack.

Parasyte The Maxim Ep.18 – “More Than Human” (Summary)

Shinichi Izumi gets confused with Tamura Reiko’s statements as she seems to contradict her initial objective of preying on humans. She informs him of the results of her investigation and study about the human’s relationship with parasites like her, then warns him not to fight Gotou as he is invincible. Just then, the police, led by Himara, surround the two as Tamura perfectly fits the description given to him by Kuramori. The investigator initially suspects Shinichi but later reaffirms himself that the boy is indeed a human, then he shoots Tamura on the forehead. Upon confirming that she is a parasite, Himara orders the police to kill her, but much to their surprise, the woman decides not to fight them back in order to save her baby. Shinichi is about to run away from her as she walks towards him, but she transforms herself  and copies the face of Shinichi’s mom to catch his attention and prevent him from fleeing.

Reiko then gives her baby to Izumi and entrusts the child to him. Tamura’s “motherly affection” reminds Shinichi of his own mom, and that act seems to seal the hole in his heart. Tears stream down his cheeks once again as Tamura collapses and dies. Satomi Murano arrives at the scene and sees Izumi in that situation, and she immediately realizes that the “old” Izumi has finally returned.

“Shinichi…this child. In the end, I didn’t do anything to it.” ©Madhouse

“Are you sad? Of course…your mom is dead.” ©Madhouse

Shinichi undergoes some interrogation as the investigator tries to uncover his secret for the last time. A serial killer who seems to have the talent to identify parasites, is placed in a room and is instructed by the police to inform them of anyone who is a parasite or who has the same ability like him. A few people who claim that they can sense parasites are put in the adjacent room. Shinichi is the last to be called in the room, and he tries to calm himself to avoid disclosing Migi. Uragami wakes up from a short nap, and his attention immediately focuses on Shinichi. He asks the investigator to instruct Izumi to look at him directly in the eye, as the latter nervously rises his head to face the man who has suddenly turned serious.

“Hey detective. Tell him to look me right in the eye.” ©Madhouse

Parasyte The Maxim Episode 11: The Blue Bird (Summary)

WARNING: Gory

The episode starts with a drunk woman talking with a man in a park. She pulls out a few strands of hair from the guy who turns out to be a “parasite”, and she ends up being killed and eaten by him and another female parasite.

Meanwhile, Kana dreams that she is being chased and surrounded by a group of monsters but then Shinichi saves her. The following day, she waits for him on his way to school and he warns her again not to get so close to him and to stay out of danger. When Shinichi leaves her to talk to Migi, Kana meets Murano and the latter asks the former if she also senses any changes with Shinichi.

“This is an experiment to see how far we can go against a group with guns and edged weapons.” ©Madhouse

Another parasite which is disguised as a man gets out of the car and enters a building where the yakuza are gathered. He kills all of them as an experiment to test his limits against humans armored with guns and blades. After he escapes, he kidnaps another man from the group who try to chase him and uses his body as another disguise. He returns to the car with Kusano and drives off to go back to their boss. The news of the massacre reaches Shinichi who is perplexed with the real motive behind the killing.

Shinichi asks Murano out and the two go on a date. However, she still senses that something is different with him especially after the incident where Shinichi clutches his chest as he suddenly remembers his mom. After their date, he walks her home and they both share a kiss, and Kana witnesses the scene.

KANA: You stupid girl. You knew this from the start. ©Madhouse

That night, she reprimands herself for setting her hopes too high even though she already knew from the start that Shinichi likes Murano. Nonetheless, she still calls him and asks him to meet her the next day. Shinichi complies since she told him that it would be the last favor she’ll ask. He arrives at their meeting place a little earlier when Migi informs him about the other parasites that it senses not far from their location. He tries to search for them and he accidentally makes an eye contact with Goto, the one who massacred the yakuza. Hirokawa Takeshi, the candidate running for the mayoral position, is with the other parasites on the platform, including two more below them. Migi advises Shinichi to get out of the area for the meantime since the others don’t seem to be interested in them. However, just as he is about to leave, Kana arrives and the situation gets even worse as the parasite sees them together.
