Ten Most Heartbreaking Deaths in Naruto

The end of Naruto is drawing near, so before that happens, I decided to make my second list about Masashi Kishimoto‘s most popular manga. So here goes my top 10 saddest deaths in Naruto, just in time for All Soul’s Day.~

10. Chiyo and Sasori

Since they are related to each other, I decided to tie them together in the last spot. The background story about the two of them provided enough reason for me to be saddened by their deaths. Poor Sasori was killed by the puppets he created a long time ago that resembled his parents. He could have dodged the attack, but it seemed like he intentionally let himself be killed for some reason. Grandma Chiyo, on the other hand, sacrificed her life to revive Gaara who died after Shukaku was extracted from him. I would like to comfort myself by believing that Chiyo and her grandchild Sasori were reunited after their deaths.

“I’m the one who should have been killed.” -Chiyo

“Everyone, pray for Elder Chiyo.”

9. Neji Hyuga

Neji had been part of the story for a very long time, and when I heard that he would die, I expected it to be really heartbreaking. Well, it was…a little. I was quite disappointed because I thought there would be some flashbacks like with the other characters before. I feel like that episode didn’t pay enough tribute to Neji. Nonetheless, the fact that Neji is gone is sad enough, and no one else can fill that void in his team.

“Why would you go so far for me?” -Naruto to Neji

8. Hiruzen Sarutobi

This was taken from the first Naruto series. I really have a soft spot for old people, so when the Third Hokage died protecting Konoha from the hands of Orochimaru, you can just imagine how doleful I was. The funeral scene made it even worse.

“The Third didn’t die for nothing.”

7. Haru and Zabuza

You might wonder why they are only in number 7 when their death was one of the most sorrowful ones in the entire series. But you see, I was initially thinking to narrow down the list to those deaths in Shippuden only. However, I couldn’t just ignore these two especially when it cost me a few sheets of tissue back then when I watched that scene. Even the Demon of the Hidden Mist couldn’t hold back his tears as he lay beside Haru to be with him in the afterlife. I am starting to wonder. Perhaps Naruto’s emotions reach me close enough that I end up crying just like him in the anime.

“If possible, I want to go to the same place you’re going to.” -Zabuza to Haku

6. Asuma Sarutobi

Even though Asuma didn’t have a lot of screen time in the series, his death was woeful enough to affect me. The fact that he died right in front of his students was even worse. And do I even need to elaborate how his students, especially Shikamaru, mourned after his death? It was painful to watch, not to mention that he couldn’t even see Kurenai and their child.

“The smoke always makes…my eyes water.” – Shikamaru

5. Nagato, Yahiko and Konan (253)

These three died in separate instances but I decided to just count them all as one. After all, Yahiko, Nagato and Konan were good friends who grew up together to establish Akatsuki. Among them, I would say that Nagato “pained” me the most (no pun intended lol) perhaps because he played a much bigger role in the series compared to the other two. The last scene where Konan’s blood-soaked sheet of paper flew back to their old hideout pinched my heart.

4. Uchiha Obito

This guy had to die a couple of times in the series! The first one was when half of his body was crushed by a boulder. Well, he didn’t actually die there, though his speech back then was enough to bring his teammates to tears. A lot of things had happened to him since then, and he ended up being an ally to Uchiha Madara.

“I wish I had more time with everyone.”

*SPOILERS*

During the Fourth Shinobi War, he had to die again only to be revived later on to assist in the sealing of Kaguya Otsutsuki. Well, I’m just grateful that he at least managed to settle things with his friend Kakashi before he left the world to reunite with Rin. The poor guy finally got to rest peacefully.

3. Minato and Kushina

The love story between these two was only briefly shown in the series, but it left a good impression on me. The joyous expressions on their faces when they learned about Kushina’s pregnancy were short-lived when Uchiha Obito took out the kyuubi from her after she gave birth to Naruto. Namikaze Minato fulfilled his role as the Hokage by saving the village, but he had to give up his life for his family. And Kushina didn’t want him to shoulder the burden alone, as she also protected her newborn child from the nine-tailed fox. Both of them died at the same time, and I would be lying if I said that I didn’t shed some tears especially at the part where Kushina delivered her last words to Naruto. At least for some consolation, Naruto managed to reunite with his parents in the latter part of the story.

“I wish I could stay with you longer. I love you.” -Kushina to Naruto

2. Uchiha Itachi

Uchiha Itachi was, and will always be, my favorite Uchiha member. The guy was undeniably good in almost everything, not to mention his fine looks. He was a villain who perfectly portrayed his role as a ruthless murderer and traitor. Even then, I already liked his character. Then when the truth about Itachi was revealed, darn it. I just loved him even more. His death brought a lot of things to light and the reality behind his actions moved the audience to tears. The guy took all the blame and reproach by himself for the sake of the village and his younger brother. He died a heroic death, and if there is one thing I regret, that would be the fact that his heroism was never exposed to the public. And yes, he was reanimated later in the series only to make the fans cry once again as he bid farewell to his beloved brother, Sasuke.

“And no matter what you do from here on out, know this…I WILL LOVE YOU ALWAYS.”

1. Jiraiya

The previously mentioned deaths caused me sorrow or made me shed a tear or two, but with Jiraiya’s demise, I was extremely grief-stricken. He is one of my favorite characters in the series, and I felt affiliated with the bond he created with Naruto. All the flashbacks that were shown before he drew his last breath only aggravated my distress. I knew that his death was inevitable, with all the foreshadowing that was shown in the earlier episodes. (That part alone already constricted my heart.) My misery reached its peak when Naruto learned about the somber news. I was just thankful that I was watching that episode alone, because my family would surely get puzzled when they saw me crying in front of my  computer. And I blame Naruto and Tsunade for that.

“You fool…”

“I wanted him to keep watching over me.”

And I’m finally done with this list! This is the second list that I have made as a sort of tribute for Naruto before it ends on November 10. A lot of characters have died in the story, so it was really difficult for me to narrow them down to ten. If I were to include some runners-up in this list, that would be the deaths of Deidara, Inoichi, Shikaku and Rin. (Did I forget someone?)  However, I’m pretty certain that the loss of our favorite characters have somehow stirred our emotions. After all, even in the world of anime, death is an inevitable thing.

So, whose death pained you the most?

Naruto Chapter 691: Congratulations!

WARNING: You guys better prepare a roll of tissue or a handkerchief because this chapter is overflowing with emotions. And oh, this contains spoilers. Read this chapter here.

Following the defeat of Kaguya, Hagoromo, who summoned the previous Kage, thanks Kakashi, Sakura, Sasuke and Naruto for saving the world. This chapter is basically just about farewell. Kakashi thanks Obito for bestowing him his power, and the sharingan that he lent to his friend vanishes with him as Obito disappears to reunite with Rin. And so the curtain falls on Kakashi of the Sharingan.

kurama

Kurama giving Naruto the *dirty* finger. LOL. Actually, he is just trying to conceal his embarrassment.

Obito_Kakashi

Obito and Kakashi saying good bye to each other.

Meanwhile, Sasuke notices Madara lying on the ground, and as he tries to get near him, he is stopped by the Sage. Apparently, Madara cannot be saved anymore, so Hagoromo tells Sasuke and Naruto to get a glimpse of their last predecessors for the final time. Madara awakes to see Hashirama next to him and they both reminisce about their dreams and friendship. Somehow, Madara feels a little remorseful for the path he has taken, and he closes his eyes as he whispers his last words. (Believe me, this scene tore my heart to pieces esp. when I saw Hashirama’s expression.)

Hashimada

HashiMada talking to each other in their final moments. And look at that downcast expression of Hashirama. I am crestfallen as well.

Naruto, on the other hand, goes to Minato and there, they have their final conversation with each other as father and son. Minato greets Naruto a happy birthday, and promises to tell Kushina about everything as he bursts into tears.

Minato

And before he totally vanishes, Naruto asks his father to tell his mom not to worry about him. After all, he has a lot of really good friends and he has a dream that he wants to achieve, and that is to follow the steps of his father and become a good Hokage like him. He wants to assure her that he follows all her advice which serves as his guidance as he grows up. And as Minato and the other Kage fade away from the scene, Naruto finally lets out the tears that he has been holding back. It is an inevitable farewell, after all.

naruto

So to sum it all, this chapter is all about these heartbreaking scenes between Hashirama/Madara, Kakashi/Obito and Naruto/Minato. Someone should have given me a warning before I read this manga. I didn’t expect to be crying just like Naruto in the picture above. But I guess it’s just right to do it this way. Just like what is written at the end of today’s chapter, THIS FAREWELL IS INEVITABLE, and this good bye is just the beginning of another episode in Naruto’s life. *sniffs*

Naruto Chapter 690: Ninja’s…!!!

(Alright. I’m just glad that the new chapter is finally out. I don’t know why it was delayed but nah. Better late than never. 😀 And oh, the newest episode of Naruto Shippuden is already out, as well. ^^)

WARNING: Spoilers ahead.

For those who read the previous chapter, you would know that Sakura landed a punch on Kaguya, which enabled Sasuke and Naruto to corner her. And thus, Chapter 690 begins!

CHIBAKU TENSEI! With that, Sasuke and Naruto finally gets to seal Kaguya with the powers that are entrusted to them by Hagoromo. Kaguya laments over her defeat and recollects the image of her sons, Hagoromo and Hamura as she is being sealed again by the other two.  All of the tailed-beasts are also released as the earth crumples and forms into a gigantic ball. Son Goku (Four-Tails) compliments Kurama’s jinchuuriki for what he has done. (But he later points out how stupid Naruto actually is at the same time. Lol. ) Amidst the turmoil, Uchiha Madara gets spit out by one of the beasts and lays on the ground unconscious. Naruto, on the other hand, goes to search for Black Zetsu. He sends him off to the huge mass of rock when Zetsu tried to mock him as a brat who is just part of the shinobi history that he created.

Good bye, Zetsu.

Way to go, Naruto!

After he dispatches Zetsu, he returns to his team members and both he and Sakura fret on how they are going to get out of that dimension. At that moment, Hagoromo appears in front of them. Kurama and the rest of the tailed-beasts surround them, too. Joining them are the “Five Kage” from their respective villages who are summoned by Hagoromo.  Minato welcomes his son back as the chapter concludes with Hagoromo’s words of appreciation for everyone’s help to save the world.

(A small dose of HashiMada in this chapter. Teehee. Just look at that expression of Hashirama as he silently stares at Madara. *sniff* )

Can I just get Madara out of that place?

Can I just get Madara’s body? If no one’s willing to pay attention to him, then let me nurse him back to health. Lol.

A Summary: Naruto Episode 372- “Something to Fill the Hole”

WARNING: May contain spoilers for those who haven’t watched the latest episode yet.

After the short background story of Hashirama and Madara in the previous episodes, the scene is finally back to the battlefield. With Kakashi being driven to another dimension by Obito, Naruto, with the rest of the gang, was left with the 10-tails and Madara. Sakura was healing him since his chakra was depleted after trying to protect everyone from the Juubi’s attack. And finally. YES. AT LONG LAST, THE FOUR HOKAGE FINALLY MADE THEIR APPEARANCE. Minato first came as he diverted the ten-tail’s bomb and sent it to the sea.

Madara: “I’ve been waiting for you, Hashirama!”

HASHIRAMA: “I’ll deal with you later!”

With slumped shoulders and a pained expression on his face, he stopped short on his tracks, his heart crushed by Hashirama’s cold rejection. The four of them positioned themselves and performed the Ninja Art Four Crimson Ray Formation, creating a red barrier around the Juubi. Hashirama then did his Sage Art: Gracious Deity Gates, pinning the Ten-Tails on the ground with his ten seals. They were able to temporarily slow down and restrain the movement of the beast with that technique.

Right after that, Uchiha Sasuke made his grand and fabulous entrance to the scene. Obviously, everyone (except Naruto since he already sensed his chakra beforehand) was surprised to see the rogue shinobi all of a sudden. They were all suspicious of him. And much to their disbelief, Sasuke proclaimed his desire to become the next Hokage. (You guys must definitely watch their reaction. It was all hilarious.)

"...but you guys are taking too much time."

“…but you guys are taking too much time.”

Sasuke and Naruto both advanced to the battlefield, leaving Sakura behind. She later on followed them as well, informing them that she isn’t that weak to be removed out of the picture. After all, she is also a member of Team 7, and a student of one of the Legendary Sannin.

"Let's show them what we're made of, ya know!"-Naruto

Oh yes! Team 7 is finally back! Watch out for the next episode: “Team 7 Assemble!”
